Mama’s Boy

Ed was on his couch watching a movie when there was a knock. He wasn’t expecting anyone in his above-garage bachelor pad at 3PM on a Saturday evening. Instead, he was bored. His reconnected group of divorced uni friends were all up to something without him. Nira and Michelle were off to a posh party. Rhys had a date. Ed had felt human for the first time over the past few weeks since reconnecting with Nira. It was fun. The guest was no guest at all. It was his mother, looking cross.

“Yes, Mam?” he asked.

“Do you own a tuxedo that fits?” Margaret pushed her way past and trudged upstairs.

“What?” Ed stared after her.

“Please have one that fits.”

“Why, Mam? Have you arranged my second marriage? Have you found me a wealthy woman willing to put up with me? If so, do tell!”

“This is no laughing matter. I spent a fortune on tickets to this party and your father comes down with the flu! In May! This is what he gets for not getting the jab!”

“What? Well, go alone.”

“I paid for two tickets, and I’ll feel ridiculous there all alone. The least you could do is take me,” Margaret said. “You still own a tuxedo?”

“I don’t think I’ve worn it in a couple of years, but sure. Not sure it fits. Given how out of shape I am at present, who knows?”

“I think it should. Try it on.”

“Mother, the idea of going with you to a big party is mortifying.”

“Why? You’re a sweetheart. It might attract the right type of girl.”

“I have sincere doubts about that.”

Ed agreed and tried on the damn tux. Nira and Michelle would be there, at least. To his surprise, while the tux was big in the arms and shoulders, it fit well enough. Oh well, he was going to make his mother’s day. Ed had nothing better to do. As embarrassing as it was to attend the event of the spring with his mother, he came to her rescue.

They departed around seven. Margaret was a consumer of gossip and loved to feel part of something. This was no different. She was particularly interested in the evening given a week ago, the Prince of Wales had come out as bisexual and resigned. It had been a splashy week for the royals, if only in all the wrong ways.

“I don’t know if I could host a party if my son had just… run away. If you ran away like that—”

“Mam, he… it’s gotta be complicated. It makes sense now why his girlfriend—well, his ex—was so keen to keep it under wraps. She’s a nice girl, actually.”

“And they won’t stand up for that girl!”

“What girl?”

“Princess Natalie! She’s a war hero and they still won’t do anything for her. Ridiculous! What year are we living in?! I should let the King know—”

Ed groaned and facepalmed. “Mother, please do not do that. Leave Nat’s father out of it. She can fight her own battles; I can assure you.”

“The Commons is going to be called to do something.
